24 Hour Movie Marathon
Long may retro 35mm screenings continue at this incredible event for many a year to come (I am aghast at the reality of no more prints for new release films)

It does mean that it's doubtful we'll get new mainstream 35mm prints for 24HR in a year or so. However, this directive is only from the US at present, there maybe some countries that lag behind in their conversion to 100% digital. Which means we could still get prints from different territories. The Hollywood needs to upgrade but I doubt it will which means we most likely won't be able to screen new films there in two years time. Which means 100% 35mm retro will be the mantra for the 24HR.
100% 35mm retro is 100% a-ok with me!
Can't wait :)
Pretty sure I'm buying a Tonton sleeping bag for this year's marathon :D
The loss of film prints is just one of those things that are sadly inevitable.
What's going to be interesting is to see how this effects the distribution and marketing of films.
Cinemas will always be there - it's not something everyone can easily have in their own home (he says sitting in front of a 5m screen :D ) - but the big costs and logistics of physical distribution of reels is going to diminish pretty quickly I think. How that effects the studio industry over time .... who knows.
I reckon we're going to have a huge uprising of the low-mid budget grind house type films as such ... not the same films, but similar level industry
What did RUBBER screen on last year?
The loss of 35mm concerns me, but it doesn't concern me as much as James Cameron's insistence that 60fps is the future. Blegh.
I was going to bring my Tauntaun sleeping bag up last year but it would of taken too much room in the car.
Perhaps this year I can squeeze it :)
What did RUBBER screen on last year?
digibeta
digibeta
you sure about that? I know it's playing off digibeta at the showcase but I seem to recall something about the file needing to be made ready at the thon.
No Al is right RUBBER was off digibeta via a very good panasonic projector.
Aesthetically I just enjoy watching old prints but it is a form of snobbery to say a turning beat up 35mm is better than projecting a bluray of same film. That beat up print is not better by most standards that we measure projection by but old beat up prints have one thing that dvds/blurays/digibeta don't have.. and that is history/nostalgia value. And as you get older that stuff starts having more weight on your emotions than you'd like it to.
We've got enough 35mm to run the Vendetta (love to sponsors) 24HR Movie Marathon for quite some time.

Sweet we can be Tauntaun buddys :D
On the one hand - the lack of 35mm prints is somewhat disappointing in those theaters don't upgrade to digital.
On the other hand, as a film maker, the practicality of being able to put together a DCP of a project and cost effectively distribute it to a greater number of locations internationally (especially in the case of short films), because once you have a master it's just a case of duping drives - that's pretty exciting.
The projection of RUBBER was perfectly fine. Was MONSTERS also from digital projection?
On one hand, surely digital projection makes getting more obscure recent releases into the marathon easier. Cheaper shipping and print costs, but with the already existing censorship and rating issues.
On the other hand, I would be all for fully classic 35/16mm marathons. There are always options away from the marathon to see strangely incredible stuff on vhs/dvd/laserdisk/blu ray with good folk. It takes something special to get obscure things screened in original 35mm. There really are only a hand full of places on the planet that screen these kind of archive titles, and we should be very grateful that once a year NZ is one of them.
Well there were some that though RUBBER was on 35mm (no names).
Absolutely spot on regarding access to more material if we open doors to digital. We have to remember that the diehards who love love love seeing old beat up 35mm are like 10% of that audience. The rest are happy watching anything. Especially new movies. Without them we couldn't afford to put on the marathon.
There's a Friday 13th coming up in May.
So you know what that means. Pencil it in.
A bit of a random story for the regulars.
Someone attempts to set up a comic-con for reality tv. Dozens attend.
So the OUTTAKES festival has booked "Banned In Australia" L.A. ZOMBIE.
I'm wondering what chance this has of getting past NZ censors, and if they even realized what they had on their hands, given the only Auckland screening is on a Monday afternoon.
In other festival news, the Spanish Film Festival is bringing JULIA'S EYES and KIDNAPPED, both of which have been much hyped by the usual suspects. Think it's just playing Auckland but I could be wrong.
In other non-festival news, the next couple months are looking pretty shithouse in the multiplex.
And in completely unrelated news, I just realized I had the chance to change my alias with a new forum and failed. Facepalm.
Great story.. too funny. Was like when I saw Johnny Fairplay at Armageddon...

LA ZOMBIE : the OFLC is and always has been very supportive of gay filmmakers. Then again Bruce la Bruce may not be their poster child. THIS JUST IN... it has passed and is aok for consumption.
Julia's Eyes is a nice throwback. Very solid work. Nothing mindblowing. Reminded me of some lesser giallos. Felt a bit TV for my liking but it was great to see on the bigscreen. KIDNAPPED is pretty good.
However the whole Spanish fest is non 35mm.
I know this because I might be taking a NZ premiere from them cos they can't play 35mm!!

After speaking with the Dep Censor down there, I'm not so sure things have gone drastically 180. I mean if DEAD GIRL pass uncut here then it could be business as usual. They are just super tough on sexual violence but they always have been. The one that sticks in my craw is SICK GIRL, which should not have been forced to have cuts made.
I'll send them THE WOMAN to shake em up.

As the poster child for "35mm or bust!", I have to say that after the screenings of RUBBER at 24HRMM and various screenings at Doc Edge festival this year, I'm definitely more open to digital projection than I used to be. It's just a question as to whether the Rialto have improved their projection or not ... does anyone know if they have? I'm assuming not, and not keen to pay $16+ to find out firsthand.

Has anyone even bothered sending A SERBIAN FILM? Or is it just a foregone conclusion that there's no way in hell it will get through?
