AUCKLAND FINAL 2011 - AWARDS

A huge congratulations with Team Grand Cheval who came from nowhere to form a super team of young enthusiastic mates who appeared to have a lot of fun making their short. A true collaboration between friends that shows in every one of its frames. The absolutely charming, seemingly effortless short "The Child Jumpers" won the audience and judges over with its honesty, heart and laugh out loud dialogue.

Mukpuddy came Runner Up with another highly polished effort from this team who makes animation look easy. You only need to see all the animated efforts that didn't make it in on time to understand just what an incredible feat it is they pulled off by not only finishing on time but finishing with a completely realised short. One that can easily stand outside of the competition.

There were so many highlights in the other finalists it would take all day to mention them. It was the feel good City Final that we've never had. I don't think anyone in the audience could complain about any of the films being there, which if you've ever seen post finale discussions on the forums, is truly saying something.

There was a sense that this year turned the corner with young teams stepping up to the mark and staking their claim. One of the big success stories of the night was Calvin Sang who started 48hours when he was just 9 years old and this year, he finally made the finals, winning Best Damn Teen, Best Cinematography and Best Editing in the process.

Thank you all again for taking part this year. I hope you continue to keep following this crazy train all the way through to the Live Grand Final on July 2nd at the Civic. One team is going to be crowned Grand Champs for 2011 and it looks like its going to be one hell of a finish.

Very happy with Best road movie and our other nominations (especially cinematography, which was a nice suprise, and best use of character, which I found hugely ironic :)

I'd also like to think that Team Picklethugs cleaning up last night will put paid to any arguments of favouritism and experienced teams hogging all the glory. It really felt like their night more than any other to me.

Will Grand Cheval be held responsible as small children all over this country are accidentally kicked in the head by inexperienced chumpers? I know I'll be having a go and I'm an unco spaz.

Although I will practice chumping my own kids first.

Top night last night! bloody stoked to win best use of character as well - didnt even know we were nominated - and cheers Ant for the 'honorable mention' at the beginning, big ups to the winners too, go the chumping! Great to see a fellow fad movie take out the prize :)
totally agree with Ant, the bar has been raised out of sight this year, many films that could hold their own outside of this comp for sure.

Picklethugs film felt a bit like a polished version of Graduate Massacre (in a good way) :)

We thought the same thing!

Personal fav of the night was Clinky's ROBOREVENGE for the sheer bravado in making a film that was just the required elements and nothing else... and still being really good!

Awkward moment of the night for us was realising 10 seconds into Lense Flare's film that we'd shot in the exact same location...

But goddamn. So many strong films - and I dug the nominations slideshow videos, have we had those before?

No idea but it must have been close. The cops turning up early into our shoot because someone had reported a couple of taggers makes more sense now - they'd probably seen that dodgy Johnny Barker chap hanging around.

Same thing happened to us actually...one of the body switch movies was filming in Torday just around the corner from us :)

Great night and all the films really deserved to be there. Congrats to winners and "losers". Congrats to organisers

Projection and audio was awesome ( and as it should be).

GRIPE: Ticketek SUCKS!. You think you have reserved seats in a block for how ever many you bought and basically ..it was an open seating arrangement.

I agree, some of those films looked dead sexy on that screen (particularly Lense Flare and One Hundred $95)

Yeah thanks to Panasonic for that massive 12k projector which if anything was too damn bright for that size screen. I thought the pics and sound were as good as they could be. For all the issues, HD is the way to go and it was a good call to get it done.
